Sisters Community Church and Vast Church Merge!!
After more than ten years of separation, and over 100 days of prayer, meetings, discovery, and exploring what God might have in store for our churches, we are excited to affirm that VAST and SCC will join together in unity as one church. Elders and leaders from both churches, with input from VAST and SCC members affirmed our coming together. VAST has affirmed the recommendation to merge, and the congregation of SCC voted overwhelmingly to approve the merger with VAST.
This is an exciting time for our churches and our community. Becoming one church is one of the clearest manifestations that our reconciling God has reconciled the world through Jesus. It is following God’s heart and desire for the church to be unified. 1 Cor. 1:10 I appeal to you, brothers, and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.
When will we become one church?
Sunday May 22nd will be the first official joint service at 9:30am. Our 9:30am start will remain our new start time as we come together as one church.
We are a Bible-based church that believes both in the inerrancy of scripture and the profound errancy of the human heart. Based in the small town of Sisters, Oregon, we deeply believe in rooting our church in God’s Word and carrying out His mandate to make disciples.
Our desire is to create a culture of loving God and loving people by:
- Connecting with God
- Caring for people
- Cultivating community
Vast Church Staff
Ryan Moffat is one of the pastors at VAST Church, whose chief responsibilities include preaching, serving, praying, and discipleship. Ryan has the unique privilege of teaching the Bible and empowering others in discipleship activities as the Church seeks to know God deeply through the word. As an elder, he also gets to help serve the church through long-term planning and pastoral activities (counseling, pastoral care, and other general pastoral duties). One passion Ryan has for VAST church is to see our church become a praying church. We covet and need the praying power of those who are called to intercession and prayer to help build this ministry. Ryan is happily married to Michelle and they enjoy raising their 4 children together.
Pastor of Children’s Ministries
David Yost has been a pastor since 1985. In 2000 Sisters became home, where he switched gears and became a children’s pastor. He has been pastor of children’s ministries at VAST since 2012. He’s always had a special place in his heart for kids and serving at VAST in this area is his sweet spot. David has been married to his wife, Rongi, since August 1977. They have three adult children, Jay, Mindi, and Minique. Jay owns his own custom cabinet business and has two kids, Tayla and Trey. Mindi has been married to Kevin since 2001 and they have four kids, Kaden, Kolbi, Paityn, and Maici. Their youngest, Minique, lives in Portland.
David enjoys spending time with his family, bass fishing, and going out on day trips playing golf with his wife.
Volunteer Opportunities. If you like to cuddle, we have a nursery with little ones that need lots of love. If you like to play with toys, we have a PreK with kids who have lots of energy. If you like to see kids with wonder, we have the K-2 who are always full of surprises. If you like to see kids gain a foundation for truth, we have the 3-5 grades. Do you have a place in your heart for kids? Good, we have a place for you!
Jonathan and Janie Martin were married in July of 1990, have three kids, Darragh, Dannah, and Daylon, and three grandkids, Myka, Benton, and Justus. Jonathan lived in East and Central Asia for 12 years (two years single and ten years married), where he taught in various universities and colleges. He served on staff at Good Shepherd Community Church in Boring, Oregon for 15 years, where he oversaw the outreach and was able to learn so much about missions from the many global workers that he and Janie got to visit and work with around the world. Jonathan loves nothing more than being in the mountains with people he loves. He and Janie now work for Co-Serve international and train others in servant leadership all over the world.
Pastor in Residency
Dustin Smith has lived in Sisters since 2014 and has served within the Vast community since 2017. Starting as a middle school youth leader, then moving into a pastoral residency, Dustin is now the Youth pastor at VAST Church. Dustin is a youth leader, teacher, street evangelist, and pastor for many within the community. This all is based in Jesus Christ (Colossians 1:28). He serves within the community to equip the body of Christ to proclaim the kingdom of God, to glorify God, and to do so passionately! (2 Timothy 2:2).
Dustin meets regularly with the staff team at VAST Church, which includes praying, eating good food, laughing, sharing stories, planning for future events, and celebrating what God is doing in our community. Through the model of Acts 2:42, the staff pursue spiritual maturity through the infallible word of God, prayer, and community.
Outside of Dustin’s passion for serving others, he enjoys hiking, CrossFit, trail running, camping, rock climbing, white water rafting, and most of all, studying and researching God’s word.
Erik Himbert is a Jesus lover and a worshiper. He loves to worship God in everything he does. He knew from a young age his gifting was music, and he strives to use his gift to bless others and draw them into the presence of God. Erik is a singer/songwriter, has been in several bands, and has played all over the U.S. and internationally.
He now enjoys teaching music in private lessons. Erik is a graduate of Azusa Pacific University, where he studied Christian Ministry and Music Education. After graduating, he spent time pursuing sound engineering and working in the recording industry, as well as live production. He has a heart for teaching and passing along to the next generation a passion for worshiping and serving God.
Director of Operations
Studying the Word of God every day these past 25+ years has made Rob Keranen’s life truly meaningful, and took him from a life of self interest that had left him empty into a life of fullness. The greatest gifts that God has given him are his wife Katie, his seven children, and five grandchildren. Attending VAST church since its inception and living in Sisters for over 20 years has given him a large number of great friendships which he is so grateful for.
Rob’s background since his mid-20’s has been primarily in the computer industry. He held a number of sales and management roles early in the history of the PC industry, worked at IBM as a Business Partner, and spent almost 20 years with an international technology-consulting company. During those 20 years he held sales, operations-management, and director roles to help build company client sales and outside business partnerships. Needless to say, he has witnessed a lot of change over 40 years of technology!
Ministry Coordinator and Administrator
Mikee Stutzman was born and raised in Oregon, where she met her husband, with whom she raised two boys, Weston and Turner. The family spent almost 9 years in Chicago going to school and ministering in a church there. Both of their sons are firefighters and EMTs.
The Stutzmans returned to Oregon in 2016 and settled here in Sisters. Mikee has helped with Worship team and Women’s Ministries in her time at Vast. She joined the staff as Ministry Coordinator in 2019. Her heart’s desire is to help ministries be successful in making disciples and bringing others to the Throne of Christ!
Renee Stelle was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she met her husband, Craig, while earning her BA in Accounting. Years later, they moved to Tallahassee, Florida for Craig to earn his Doctorate at FSU. Their two kids, Alisa and Ryan, were born in Florida. The family moved to Oregon in 2016 and they still feel like they are living in a dream because of all the beauty and adventures to be had in Central Oregon.
Renee enjoys camping, hiking, cross-country skiing, paddle boarding, tubing down the Deschutes River, baking, knitting, reading books, and conversing over coffee with friends and family (her parents and most of her siblings live in Bend). She also loves numbers and spreadsheets, so she volunteered to help with some of the bookkeeping at VAST Church in 2019 and then took on the rest of the bookkeeping responsibilities in 2021 when the need was presented. She is thrilled to use her skills to help the church track and manage tithes and donations as the staff and members work to fulfill the mission of making disciples for the glory of God and the joy of all peoples!
